Stamping School :: Simple Resist Technique

 

This is one of my favourite techniques for creating backgrounds or a feature panel for a card.  Its a simple resist technique using clear ink & embossing powder, Ranger Distress inks, and of course some lovely stamps from Banana Frog which are Scribble Flowers

   

Start with a piece of white card.  Ink up the stamps with clear VersaMark ink and randomly stamp 3-4 images of various sizes.  On these panels I've chosen the large and 2 smaller flowers.  Cover the images with embossing powder, gently tap off the excess and heat set.  These embossed flowers will  'resist' any colour that is added on top of them and will remain white.

Use a piece of cut'n'dry foam to gently add Peeled Paint distress ink around the edges of the card and over the stamped images - I'm aiming for a 'cloudy' effect: very soft, no hard edges. Make some areas darker than others. Gently dry with the heat tool.

Ink up the stamps again with the VersaMark and add more flower images to the piece - don't forget to go over the edges. Add embossing powder and heat set.  These embossed fowers will form a 'resist' and 'protect' the green colour when the next ink colour is added.

Rub over the surface of the card in places with blue ink - see how the second set of flowers are remaining green even after the bue is added.  This is what I like about resist techniques - you can build up layers, and the flowers have a raised effect from the embossing.

For the resist technique you can use any dye based inks, but I've chosen to use distress inks because I like what happens to the surface of the page when you flick water onto the inks - little pale patches appear: little water marks where the colour has been diluted.

 

Its given the page a distressed look - but in a good way! 

To finish I stamped a few more flowers using the distress inks to tone in, and where these flowers overlayed the embossed flowers the embossing resists the inks and so pushes these last images to the background so the white and green flowers remain on top.

This is a great time saver and a nice way to make items with a common theme - the pattern has been created randomly and so can be cut up as required to make a few cards, or page embellishments, ATCs etc etc etc.   It would look great with other stamp sets too - fireworks, funky flowers, retro snowflakes......
