We had so many wonderful submissions for
the 2010 Banana Frog design team that in addition to our amazing design
team, each month we will have a guest designer showing you fantastic creations. The guest
designer will have two days to show their lovely projects, 1st and 20th
of the month.This
month's guest designer is Diane Ingram. I love how Diane uses a range of
household items that you might not associate with crafting -and she
definitely makes you look at your make up in a new light :) To see Diane's first projects using Banana Frog stamps, look here. Over again to
Diane...
Well I am going
to start my second spot with a confession ……… these are some of my absolute
treasured photos and I am ashamed of the damage that I have allowed to happen
to them.
Some of the
photo’s I have carried for over thirty years, and I very rarely leave them
behind. Each one is tied up with someone I love and a very special memory. Sadly I no longer have some of my loved
one’s but I do have the memories and these photo’s help keep them alive. (I love
the African belief in people who have passed away live on whilst there are
still people around to remember and speak their name. Death does not alter or
end the life; it merely causes a change in its conditions).
When the Take
Note set arrived it gave me the inspiration to finally do something more
meaningful with my precious little collection and preserve the memories behind
them. I have to be honest this is
not a set I would have thought about purchasing. I love scrapbooking but never
make enough time for it but the more I used this set the more I found different
things I could do with it, it’s absolutely brilliant. As I mentioned in my last
post I am staying true to the principles of my blog of keeping papercrafting
affordable. The entire project is made up of things that can be found around
the home.
Junk
Mail Pocket Album
The ribbons were
the only thing I used from my crafting stash but these could be replaced with
wool, strips of fabric or even string would look quite trendy. The main album
is made from junk mail envelopes and a 6p document folder.
I used various
stationary papers to decorate the album (I loved Hannah’s post in June about
using graph paper etc. on your projects) I too love working with these papers
and the graph paper led the colour scheme for this project. I also used some
coloured paper cut from a brochure. The ink is from water based brush markers
(posh felt pens!) and some of the ink is from a Printer Cartridge refill kit.
Select
envelopes that are the same size, trim off the top flaps and fold in half,
Stick these back to back (I only stuck the top and bottom edges as I wanted to
create an extra pocket for a journaling tag (scraps from the document folder,
stamped with the largest journaling panel) in-between each section.
Create
the cover by cutting a strip of the folder four times the width of the front
flap. I also allowed a centimetre extra to make the cover larger than the
inside wallets. It’s also important to allow a few millimetres for the spine;
this will depend on the depth of your album.
Stick the ribbons
round the envelope booklet. Fold the front cover and punch some holes to thread
the ribbons through. Then stick the cover over the front and back flaps of the
envelopes.
BUT….before you do this…..decorate all the
elements first!!!
I went to town
with the stamps and the inks. I distressed some of the papers with the ink and
my handmade daubers (details on my blog) and covered the inside of the
envelopes. I washed the envelopes with diluted ink. Then stamped panels and
background details with the Take Note set.
I stamped extra journaling panels for the titles onto
Invoice Pages, these are lovely light papers, which lent themselves to having
the edges folded and curled. On some of the panels I inked a different colour
on the back to create a contrasting look once curled.
The more I played with the stamps the more I saw the
potential of these stunning designs. Inking with pens gave great versatility
and meant details could be highlighted with different colours. Individual
elements can be built up to create larger motifs and the little heart looks
lovely stamped to create a flower.
Any print on the
envelopes could be disguised with handmade paper flowers and tabs. Faux brads
were punched from silver packaging.
For the front
panel I just inked the scroll element and printed it back to back to frame the
word “special” from the Retro Greetings set. I used clear nail varnish
to protect the panel.
To
create the decorative spine I masked off the opposite areas before using the
large stamp.
As the album is
not archival safe I scanned the originals and then stored them safely. The copies are now in their pockets
with the memory recorded on the hidden tag.
The PC printed tag
sums up this little album
“Memory is a way of
holding onto the things you love,
the things you are, the things you never
want to lose.”
Decorative
Ribbon
Well for my last
project I have kept it short and sweet….. it’s not something new but it is
something that I forget to do and I don’t know why as it’s so effective. I have
spools and spools of plain ribbon and it looks so effective once it’s been
stamped on.
My daughter
recently bought my husband a soft toy meerkat…. great, it had a smoking
jacket…. but SHOCK HORROR! it didn’t have a cravat and you couldn’t possibly
have a meerkat without a cravat (apparently). So it was amazing timing when I received the Funky
Paisley set, perfect for creating a meerkat cravat. I did have quite a play with different
inks but quite honestly they all worked on satin ribbon, some bled a bit but
gave darker results, some gave a crisper image but appeared paler (to be fair
some of my pads are not new), I will put my test pieces on my blog for
reference, (will also put a scanned image of a piece of graph paper on there as
well in case you fancy having a play). www.justaddglueto.blogspot.com
So it just leaves
me time to say a big thank you to Bev and Banana Frog for inviting me and
sharing the stamps sets, I am still playing with them all and actually can’t
wait to incorporate the Take Note set on a card.
Plus thanks to the
lovely people who left me a comment and thank you for reading this and being
patient…. I tend to waffle a lot!!
Anyway in the
words of the great Two Ronnie’s it’s “Goodbye” from me……
and…..
……… from him”!
Thank you so much Diane for some fantastic projects. I absolutely love the mini-book you have made, gorgeous and also how you have used things from around your house -of course it doesn't mean we can't buy stash, we can just use it in other ways!
Check back next month for some wonderful projects by our next guest designer :)
